An open competition submission for the Atlantic City Boardwalk Holocaust Memorial, to be sited on an existing 40 x 60 feet seafront platform.
Our concept uses the square, circle and golden section, as components of humanist geometry, to locate each element of the design and define the central gathering space. On one side of this area is the Holocaust Monument, a shard of polished stone containing a large commissioned sculpture. Opposite is the Genocide Monument, a block of layered stone slabs each representing a genocidal event since 1945.
The steel-framed trapezoid walls, derived from the central section of a six-pointed star, are clad in aluminum panels. These are cast with a pattern of interlocking diamonds in raised relief with eight individual facets surrounding an illuminated central void. This combination of eight and one reflects the Menorah and its symbolism as a "light unto the nations". The facades contain more than six million facets, one for each victim of the Holocaust.
