Our concept for the World Trade Center site, prepared shortly after its destruction in 2001, uses the footprints of the Twin Towers to generate a masterplan based on an interplay of circles with the city grid. The resulting geometry delineates two shard-like skyscrapers anchored to the centre points of the old towers. The circles reappear in both solid and outline form, first as a crescent of new buildings housing the Transport Intermodal Center, and as hard landscaping within an urban park.
An underground Memorial Museum is situated in the heart of the design, utilizing the sub-basement space of the South Tower.
Our general approach is inspired by the planning principles of Camillo Sitte whose work focused upon the harmonious integration of the old and the new using neo-classical precepts of the Ideal City.
